The priestess broke her vow of celibacy, loved the proconsul Pollione (the Roman occupiers!) and bore him two children. Many appeared disconcerted by the fact that in the first act her voice broke on a few occasions - but can one really pour out one's harried heart in the context of a recitative? In the second act Bellini's tunes were rendered extremely well."
